If you’ve ever sat down and watched your grandparent’s wedding video, you probably noticed the grainy quality, square frames, and lack of audio. These videos were most likely taken on Super 8 film. Over the last ten years, this incredible analog video style has made a resurgence in the wedding space, and we love the vintage quality and cozy aesthetic it provides. For couples looking for a fun addition to their wedding videography package, there’s no better option than Super 8 footage.
Super 8 is a motion-picture film format from 1965. It’s an improved version of the original 8mm film, developed in 1932 by Kodak to create an accessible home movie format film during the Great Depression. While the film was the standard in the late ’60s, it had a resurgence in pop culture in the ‘80s and ‘90s, appearing in music videos for artists from Madonna to Nirvana.
The film’s availability fluctuated throughout the years until Kodak reintroduced the film stock and camera in 2016. Now, the film has become popular in the wedding industry for its nostalgic feel that can’t be replicated digitally.
While Super 8 footage is an incredible add-on to digital videography, we generally don’t suggest using it as the only video format on your big day. First, there’s no audio available with this vintage film, so it’s not the best format for recording your speeches and vows. Additionally, each roll of film is only 3 minutes long. Couples are welcome to add additional rolls, but we start with two rolls or six minutes of footage. We find that the best wedding videos combine Super 8 and digital film, allowing us to capture hours of footage and audio that capture all the highlights of your day.
Just like with film photos, working with Super 8 film is a fun but time-consuming process. After your wedding weekend events are complete, we send off your rolls of film to be digitally scanned. This allows us to incorporate the footage into your full wedding video. In addition, we stitch all the Super 8 footage together for a Super 8-only video so you can enjoy all of the clips that didn’t make the final cut. Once we receive the original film rolls after processing, we provide them to the couple as a keepsake.
Our couples love Super 8 because it gives the same warm, sentimental feelings you get from old family videos. Super 8 video feels authentic in a way that is hard to capture with digital videography. Here at Carhart, we offer Super 8 film as an add-on to our videography collections. The base addition includes two rolls of film, but additional rolls can be added a la carte. If you’re looking for a team to capture your wedding with a mix of vintage and modern formats, we’d love to connect.
